Media summary: Passenger Lorina Lupe Veamatahau was killed when the car she was riding in crashed while the driver tried to flee police. At about 10:30 p.m. police tried to stop Leylani Simmons, for driving recklessly, but she refused to yield and led officers on a chase for nearly two miles at speeds of up to 80 mph. Simmons reportedly ran several stop signs and drove on the wrong side of the road before crashing and overturning her car, pinning Veamatahau between the pavement and the car. Veamatahau died at the scene. Simmons sustained minor injuries. In 2014, Simmons was found guilty by a San Mateo County Superior Court jury of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading police.
