Media summary: After a fistfight between the two men, off-duty SFPD officer Steve Lee fatally shot Gregory Hooper four times in the chest at point-blank range. Hooper was described as an ex-con and street vendor. According to a March 11 2003 SF Chronicle article by Van Jones, "At least three witnesses told The Chronicle that Lee fired not in self-defense but in anger. Lee had a record of off-duty misconduct, having been cited previously by the Office of Citizen Complaints." Lee was rapidly exonerated.
