The state trooper was heading north on Oakland Avenue, in Decatur, en route to intercept a suspect who shot a police officer. He had his lights and sirens turned on. At that time, a 26-year-old Decatur woman was driving west on Harrison Avenue in a Honda Odyssey. As the trooper's vehicle approached the Harrison Avenue intersection, the Honda pulled into the intersection. The trooper struck the driver's side of the vehicle, causing extensive damage to both vehicles and injuring both drivers. The woman was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead from her injuries. The trooper was last reported to be in critical condition at an area hospital.
