The troopers, attempting to avoid the stop sticks, struck one another. Painter's vehicle then struck Meyer, killing him. Burgess was arrested that night. While Burgess reportedly said he fled because he was driving without a license, the reason police attempted to stop him apparently were not reported. Burgess was found guilty on the charges of murder and endangering others while eluding law enforcement, and not guilty on possessing marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
