Media summary: Mike Mansell was the passenger in a car driven by Kent Washington that was traveling 56 mph in a 40 mph zone. He was coming home from work at the Nissan parts distribution. SCHP trooper Austyn Vaughn activated his blue lights and sirens in attempt to pull Washington over for a speeding violation. Washington did not stop, and so Vaughn engaged in a high speed pursuit, with Mansell inside the vehicle. The vehicles traveled on US-25 and I-85 reaching speeds of up to 117 mph until Washington crashed, killing Mansell. His three children were issued a $175,000 settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit against the South Carolina Highway Patrol in May 2021.
